About
The concept of Spatial Development Initiatives (SDIs)
was created in 1996 as part of the PRIDS regional programme, implemented by the South African Departments of Transport, Trade and Industry.
This programme was designed to meet the macro-economic needs of African countries by reducing economic disparities. SDIs have thus become a strategic tool for development and economic integration for Africa and the African Union, particularly through the NEPAD initiative.

The Democratic Republic of Congo has integrated SDIs through the Bas Congo Development Corridor (CDBC) project, a crucial project also involving the Republic of Angola. The aim of this project is to promote and implement multi-sector investments, mobilising both public and private players.
It was against this backdrop that the Directorate-General for Industrial Development Corridors (DGCDI) was created.
A public administrative and technical body, the DGCDI is placed under the supervision of the Ministry of Industry and has legal personality.
It was created by Decree no. 20/001 of 05 March 2020 to coordinate national and sub-regional economic integration efforts, building on the achievements of the Regional Programme of Spatial Development Initiatives (PRIDS) and the Bas Congo Development Corridor (CDBC), the fruit of bilateral cooperation between the DRC and South Africa.
